Before getting any type of abortion, you first need to know if you are actually pregnant.
Home pregnancy tests can be accurate, but it’s important to confirm your pregnancy with a medical professional. We can provide you with a professional grade pregnancy test.
An ultrasound exam provides vital information about your pregnancy. Many pregnancies do not carry past the first trimester, due to miscarriage.
Ultrasound exams are performed for three main reasons:
- to confirm the pregnancy is located within the uterus
- estimate how far along you are in the pregnancy
- check viability (if we’re able to detect a fetal heartbeat)
Different abortion methods are used at different stages of pregnancy. The information gathered during an ultrasound determines what type of abortion would be an option for you.
It’s important to get tested for STIs before having an abortion. Many women with STIs are not symptomatic and do not realize they are infected.
Women who undergo a surgical abortion with an untreated STI are more likely to develop PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease) following the procedure. PID can lead to serious consequences including infertility, ectopic pregnancy, abscess formation and chronic pelvic pain.
