What Is Ectopic Pregnancy?

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg is implanted outside of the uterus. It usually occurs due to misshapen or damaged fallopian tubes.

It is also important to know the signs of a possible ectopic pregnancy. These can include:

  • Shoulder pain
  • Extreme lightheadedness or fainting
  • Severe abdominal or pelvic pain with vaginal bleeding

If a woman learns that she has an ectopic pregnancy, she must seek immediate medical attention. Ectopic pregnancies are very dangerous if left untreated and require medical intervention. This form of pregnancy is nonviable and can cause major health complications without proper care.

What Are the Risk Factors of an Ectopic Pregnancy?

It is not always possible to know why an ectopic pregnancy occurs, but there are certain factors that increase a woman’s chances of experiencing one.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, these risk factors include:

  • A history of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
  • A previous ectopic pregnancy
  • A history of infertility
  • Surgery performed on the fallopian tubes
  • Endometriosis
  • In vitro fertilization (IVF)
  • An intrauterine device (IUD)
  • Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
  • A history of smoking

How Will I Know if I Have an Ectopic Pregnancy?

To determine whether you have an ectopic pregnancy, you will first need to confirm your pregnancy with lab-quality pregnancy testing. You will also want to receive an ultrasound; this will identify where the pregnancy is located.

You may need additional testing to learn more about your pregnancy. A Woman’s Concern offers limited obstetrical ultrasounds with certified sonographers at no cost to you.
